Support and questions

Most answers are below. For anything else, email support@localgatekeys.app. Never send us your master password, recovery phrase or vault file; we will never ask for them.

Your vault

I forgot my master password. Can you reset it?

No. We never have your master password or your vault, so there is nothing we could reset. If you created a recovery phrase, use it on the unlock screen to open the vault and set a new password.

Without the password or the recovery phrase, the vault cannot be opened by anyone. Backups are encrypted with their own backup password, so a backup you can still open is the other way back in.

Do you keep a copy of my vault?

No. There is no LocalGateKeys account or server that stores vaults. Your vault exists only on your devices and in any backups or cloud folders you set up yourself.

Where is the vault stored on my PC?

In your Windows user profile, under %LOCALAPPDATA%\LocalGateKeys. Copying that file somewhere else is safe, because it is encrypted, but use scheduled backups rather than copying the live file.

Can I import from another password manager?

Importers for other password managers are in development. Until they are released, you can add items by hand or let the browser extension save logins as you sign in.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes, completely. The app only uses the network for update checks (which also fetch the licence revocation list) and for sync if you set it up. Strict offline mode in Settings turns all of these off.

Filling sign-ins

Why does the browser extension need the desktop app?

The vault is kept in the desktop app, not in the browser. The extension asks the app, through a small local helper, for the logins that match the site you are on. That way the browser never holds your whole vault.

A Windows app will not fill. Why?

Windows app fill only works when the app exposes real sign-in fields to Windows. It will refuse when:

  • the app has been updated since you bound it, so its fingerprint changed; bind it again
  • the app runs as administrator and LocalGateKeys does not
  • the sign-in screen is drawn by a game engine or an embedded web page that cannot be verified

These refusals are deliberate. LocalGateKeys will not fall back to recording or simulating keystrokes blindly.

Does LocalGateKeys log my keystrokes?

No. It installs no keyboard hook and never watches what you type. See things LocalGateKeys never does.

Pro, licences and payment

What does Pro add?

Unlimited items. The free edition has every feature but holds up to 4 items: logins, notes, cards, identities and every other kind count, items in the trash do not. See pricing.

What happens if I have more than 4 items without Pro?

Nothing is taken away. This can happen after upgrading from an older version or when items arrive by sync. Every item stays usable, editable and fillable; you just cannot add a new one until you buy Pro or go back under 4.

Do I have to pay again for updates?

No. Pro is a single payment that includes every future update. There is no subscription and nothing to renew.

How many PCs can I use Pro on?

All the PCs you personally use. The licence is for one person; please buy one for each member of your household or team.

How do I turn on Pro, and what if I lose my key?

After payment you see your licence key straight away, with a file to download. Paste the key in Tools > Licence. The key is also saved inside your encrypted vault, so restoring a backup restores Pro. See your Pro licence.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, a full refund within 30 days of purchase, no questions asked. A refunded licence is revoked, so the 4-item limit applies again; every existing item stays usable. See the refund policy.

Who handles the payment, and can I get an invoice?

Paddle sells Pro on our behalf as merchant of record. They take the payment, apply the right VAT or sales tax and issue receipts and invoices, including invoices with your company's VAT number.

Sync and iPhone

Does Wi-Fi sync go over the internet?

No. Paired devices on the same network connect to each other directly. Changes are encrypted with keys only those two devices hold.

What can my cloud provider see if I sync through a cloud folder?

Encrypted files, their sizes and when they change. Not the names, usernames, passwords or anything else inside your vault. Your provider's own terms apply to the files you store with them.

Is there an iPhone app?

An iPhone app is coming. It will sync with your Windows PC and, like the Windows app, will collect no data.
